Bakewell is the only market town in the National Park, consisting of both domestic stalls and a cattle market. There are many shops clustered around Bakewell's marketplace and a very good tourist information centre.
During the day we visit the magnificent Tissington Well Dressings. Well Dressing is a fascinating Derbyshire tradition which involves decorating wells and springs with beautiful petals and other natural materials. A theory suggests that this tradition started after the plague. Tissington was one of the very few villages that escaped the deadly disease, therefore each year a thanksgiving to the source of pure water was given, and so the tradition of decorating wells and springs with flowers was born.
Today, Tissington villagers continue to dress their wells with delicate, intricate and colourful designs, still using only natural and organic materials. There are usually six Well Dressings to marvel at in Tissington.
